Reply #4 From: Pete (pvchinnici@aol.com) Date: 01/05/2007 HI Anthony - I remember Charlie the butcher from VAlenti Meats. Tall funny guy with glasses. We loved goin to see "Crazy Charlie"! He was forever kicking us out of his store. It had two entrances - one on Highlawn, and the other on Stillwell. Sawdust on the floor. Charlie was the best. I lived on West 12th between Highlawn and Quentin, then w 13th near Ave P. Went to PS 97 from '61 '68 and Seth Low '68 to '70. Thanks, Chris Reply #7 From: James (jgm1953@earthlink.net) Date: 07/29/2018 Do I remember Charlie Valenti? I certainly do! I lived at 15 Highlawn Ave practically next door to his store, where my grandparents lived. My mother would send me to Charlie to pick up the meat order and Charlie would always give me a small box of Sunmaid rasains whilst I caught a glimpse of Mr Valenti, his dad in the freezer. My family from my Grandmother to my mother got their meat from Charlie and his father for decades, until he closed the store. For the rest of her life my mom who died in 2003 would always compare meat to Charlie's and his always won out. Even after we moved, Charlie would still deliver our meat. I remember a photo my parents had for years of a VJ Day party on W 13th street that had Charlie and his brother in it . He'd come over to the house on a Sunday morning with a box of meat and sit down, with a cup of coffee and chat with my parents whom he knew for decades. He'd say, "Dina I brought you this and that this week." My mom was always satisfied with his order. He was very much a part of our lives. in Brooklyn, New York today! |
