Hi all...my grandparents owned and ran Chookies luncheonette
for 35 years. It was right across from New Utrecht High
Schoo l under the el. I know it was a popular hangout for a
lot of students between the years of 1949 & 1984. I would
love to hear any memories that anyone has of my grandparents
or the store.

Hi Amanda,
I spent many a time at Chookies in the late sixties, went to
New Utrecht High and was one of the wrong crowd. I was a
Stiletto, a gang that "hung out" on 79th St. or played in
the schoolyard. If I recall Seymore was behind the counter.
It was funny how he knew me by name, always knew when I was
down and that my drink of choice was a lime gimlet (sans
gin) didn't even have to ask. Always felt he knew more than
he let on, that he was kind, even when he blew a storm. Not
everyone was that good.
Be Good,
 -Doug

Amanda,

My name is Mark Meade. My wife is Terry Brightman Meade. We both lived in Boro
Park and went to New Utrecht H.S. 1961 and 1963 graduates. Naturally, Chookies
and your family were an important part of our lives. My graduating class of
1961 is having its 50th reunion on. September 17, 2011. First at the school at
4:00 and then on to Siricos catering on 13th Avenue and 80th Street.

Please, if possible pass this information on to Ellen. Terry and Ellen were in
the same year.

Below is my contact information.

Thank you and fond wishes to your family.

I was a student at NUHS from 1962-1964 and spent every morning before class
waiting in Chookies for my friends to arrive from Boro Park from that subway
station. The day JFK was shot I ran into Chookies to call my older brother
because I couldn't believe what I'd heard, only to hear from him that indeed it
was true. Seymour and his wife (sorry - was it Ellen?) were in tears. Chookies
was more crowded than I'd ever seen it before. It was like a family getting
together in mourning. So many memories - pining over Norm ? - a basketball
player who hung out there but never noticed me; tuna fish sandwiches with
vanilla malteds after school; leaving campus and heading there for an afternoon
"break" from a class or 2! Chookies is in my memories and in my heart forever!
